A return to Buffleopia

On February 13th, 2005 we opened the gates to Buffleopia, home to the Bucolic Buffledog, a.k.a. Buffledog, a.k.a. Taylor and chronicled here at the Damp Dog. Over the course of time, most of you knew him as the Buffledog and for many of the readers here the name Buffledog has become synonymous with the Bernese Mountain Dog breed. After losing Taylor over 2 years ago I think my mind just retired the name as teams retire player’s numbers. To be quite frank, I didn’t think there would ever be another Buffledog. I stand corrected.

Gryphon is a very different dog than Taylor, but there are some very similar characteristics (aside from the obvious breed ones) that have given both of us pause. Perhaps it is because he is Taylor’s nephew - sired by Taylor's brother Sam. One of the most obvious and endearing common characteristics is the ability to look you in the eye with rapt attention; engaging in a silent and steady conversation – there is more going on in between those fluffy ears than we give them credit for having. There is the quick acceptance of new people that is so very similar, as those of you that got to meet Taylor will know exactly what I’m talking about. Sometimes it is very hard not to call Gryphon “Taylor”, as we have done more often than we probably should admit.

Gryphon does bring both exuberance and energy to Buffleopia that we sorely missed with Taylor because of his multiple orthopedic issues. Some days Gryphon is like an F-18 with its afterburners engaged and it remains an unexpected event when he bursts into this kind of speed play! There is also a steady calm that Gryphon can display and it is that calm that makes him an excellent candidate to train for a Delta certification. I had such good experiences taking Taylor to the retirement community that my dad lives in that we want to carry this kind of engagement to a more involved level locally. There is always a need for Delta dogs in the hospitals and elder care facilities. Gryphon has already enriched our lives in so many ways that it seems a shame not to share this with those who could benefit so greatly from such wonderful interaction.

The boy is also a master thief, a regular klepto-dog! A very stealthy klepto-dog! More than once we have been engaged with a movie or show and he busies himself by gathering up all our shoes, all his toys and all the cats' toys. Then he's emptying the laundry hamper and grabbing the towels from both the downstairs bathrooms as well as from the kitchen. All of these items will then be piled on his bed and at some point one of us will look up and there he will be, right in the middle of his feathered nest with a grin of satisfaction on his face. It is hard not to laugh at this Buffle-wuzzle. What a funny boy!

I was concerned about our wildlife population here at Vulpine Acres and how they would all react to Gryphon’s presence. Giving chase has not been an issue and he merely talks to them as only dogs can talk – deer, fox and, of course, cats. I was afraid that his scent or his spoor would scare some of them away, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. In fact, several of the fox and deer are becoming bolder and staying closer even when we are outside. He’s stood within 6 feet of Simon (the alpha male fox) and dropped into the play pose when he saw Buckwheat (the little male deer from last year – who is growing a pretty impressive rack this year) and Buckwheat just looked at him. All three cats have come to a place of acceptance with him with varying degrees of contact. The Vulpine Café remains open and busy and we are much relieved.

So the gates to Buffleopia have once again been opened and Buffleopia is certainly more populated. Though there may only be one Bucolic Buffledog, Gryphon is certainly a Buffledog of the first order. The connection between Gryphon and us was the right call by the breeder and we cannot thank her enough for both her gift and her insight. Let the social lubricity begin!

How wonderful that Gryphon is adapting, and his new extended family is adapting back! Isn't it wonderful? I've noticed that the visiting deer here seem to know that my dogs can't get to them, so their meanderings come closer to the house as time goes on. I think (or is just hope?) that the barking is becoming less insistent!

I have to say that I've also noticed similar traits in my new family to the past ones, and there is not the familial trail. I've wondered recently if they have internalized those traits by some quirk of their brief acquaintance with the older ones, or if it might be because they have learned some of those things from me and my routines. However it happens, it is warming to my heart that I sometimes "see" my previous loves in my current ones.

lol...sounds like he's a collector of all sort of things ;)

And you're right. I still connect your blog and sometimes even the photo's of Gryphon with Taylor. And I never even met Taylor.

But it's good to hear that he's settling in. Might be a bit of a stretch for him to play with the deers and the foxes though...lol
Then again, stranger things have happened :p

In any case - he's adorable :))

Awww! How cute! I may be misreading that wistful gaze but he looks like he'd like to be chewing that boot. Or maybe having a good game of tug with it.

I'm so glad he's settling in so nicely and that the other animals are accepting him too. Sounds like you feel blessed, Seamus. I bet Gryphon feels that way too.

Peace!

Oh my, I've grinned till my face hurts! I so enjoy your stories and want a Buffledog of my own...our Mindylou would love a Buffledog if we told her he/she was a cat. Gryphon is so lovely, and I'm sure he doesn't care if you call him Gryphon or Taylor long as you don't call him late to dinner!
big hugs to the Buffledog!!!

A lot going on between those fluffy ears is right!

Sounds like a dog who knows how to mischevously and playfully garner attention while simultaneously embedding himself into everyone's heart. :)

Its awesome to see that you have found another best friend in Gryphon.
He seems amazing. You do know that letting him take shoes is very very naughty, dont you?

Just wait til he gets ahold of one of the wives 100 numbers and you are in for it, mister! (Hey my favorite and only shoes are Chacos and they cost 100 bucks!)

As for that kitty down there, Id say thats a smart one. My black Bombay cat loves to be squirted with the hose. She pretends to be annoyed by it, but then comes right back for more. It's not easy being black and furry in the summer....

Have a great weekend.

Yes, I know all about thieving dogs. My dog Pepper (before Daisy) stole shoes from the neighbors, but never in pairs and never in our sizes, lol! We nicknamed her "Pipsewah."

He does remind me so much of Taylor also. Wanna bring him to Fredricksburg? ;-D

This is an amazing post about life! You hit the nail on the head with the word, "endearing". This dog is returning life back to you with meaning and you, in turn, are sharing that special bond a dog brings forth with others. This will only continue a deepening life for them too. A welcomed and inspiring post, Seamus!

At least you know where to look for things. No more saying "do you have any idea where my _ is?"

I too am so pleased that the breeder was so intuitive. Lucky you and lucky Gryphon.

A buffledog indeed, and a gorgeous buffle at that! I am so happy to hear that you have bonded so well.
I can't tell you how many times we have called out Hercules when talking to our new boy Otus. Sometimes Otus acts so much like Herc that I wonder if a little bit of Herc's soul is inside Otus (because Hercules knew I couldn't live without him). Now I'm getting all worked up. I have a habit of doing that when I come to your blog.

So, did he chew that boot to threads? What a sweety face he is! :-) Animals sure have a way of stealing our hearts!

Besides our hearts, our Maxie loved stealing my shoes when he was little. He always knew to find that very moment when the closet was left open by accident. A few quick bites of the throat line, and another of my good pairs was history. Never once did he touch on old shoe. After the shoe-tick came the ball and claw of the dining room table. Thank heaven he grew out of that chewing business, otherwise he would have chewed us into the poorhouse!

I'm so happy that Gryphon is fitting in so well with the family and population of Vulpine Acres! He seems like a sweet boy - something else he has in common with Taylor.

And you're right about the legacy of the Buffledog. One of Rick's friends has a BMD named Oliver, and we all refer to him as "Buffledog" - it just fits the breed. :)

what a wonderful idea to have gryphon certified as a delta dog. a dear friend of mine had her dog certified, i don't know if it was through delta or another organization though. it was a wonderful experience for them both. i will even say just reading about gryphon and seeing his eyes in these pictures has helped my mood a bit today. thank you.

Well hello! And Gryphon looks to be just fabulous. We have had a similar wonderful experience with a buffle in the form of a visitor to our house that has been a very good influence on our Stella -- Stella has not tolerated another dog presence since Clive Dog, who we lost last thanksgiving. They are just wonderful wonderful beasties!

Good to check in -- it has been too long. So long it doesnt' recognize my password!

It's so cool that Gryphon is getting a 4 footed family as well as a 2 footed one--so often the 4 footed one just doesn't balance outand the pup has to be separated from the 4 footed portion of the family.
